Driver hits utility pole, dies

Saturday, October 31, 2009

A Fayetteville man died Friday evening after his truck hit a utility pole.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. on Helen Street.

Police say the driver, 50-year-old Darnel Williams, ran off the road and hit a utility pole splitting it in two.

They say he was speeding and attempted to pass a woman who was driving a Ford Mustang when his Ford F-150 pick-up truck clipped the rear end of the Mustang causing him to veer off of the road and hit the pole.

Williams was ejected and became pinned underneath his vehicle. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Mustang did not sustain any injuries.

Authorities had to close Helen Street in both directions to traffic from Boros Drive to Pamalee Drive.

All lanes of traffic were reopened just before 11 p.m.

Power in the area was knocked out due to the crash and was restored around 8 p.m.

Further details about the accident have not been released.
